I’m Gary Merrill. I own Wilderness Waters Travel. I’m a personal fly fishing travel consultant, specializing in creating custom fly fishing adventures to the wild and remote regions of Alaska.
In 1996, my wife Heather and I bought the Royal Coachman Lodge in Bristol Bay Alaska. Thus, began my love affair with the “Great Land.” I am a long-time Alaskan bush pilot, guide, and now former Alaskan lodge owner. I have flown the Alaskan bush and guided fishermen to Alaska’s greatest fly fishing destinations for over 30 years!
I’ve been a professional fly fishing guide since 1974. I have fished in remote locations all around the world, both as guide and guest, and have developed a thorough understanding of what makes a truly great fly fishing operation. I represent a handful of lodges that have achieved “legendary” status.
I am retired from flying and guiding now and I created Wilderness Waters Travel in 2016 as my way of showcasing and sharing these remarkable places with other kindred spirits. I purposely limit my representation to lodges and operators with whom I have personal and continuing experiences. This allows me to give you very accurate information and advice concerning each operation as well as some personal insights and experiences about each destination.
